About 44 million Americans, almost 70 percent of them women, have osteoporosis (low bone density). It is advisable to be aware of the commonality of the disease and start to combat its development at even an early age with some simple dietary guidelines and personal medical facts.

Women develop less dense bones at maturity, lose estrogen at menopause, and live longer than men; factors that increase women's osteoporosis risk.

In post menopause a lack of estrogen which causes menopause, brings a higher risk to women; estrogen deficiency leads to osteoporosis in some. Estrogen medication safety concerns should be considered as some have reported side effects and complications.

A family history of osteoporosis is usually a factor for increased susceptibility. A bone density test is a good idea and should be considered for an accurate assessment of bone condition. Daughters of women with the disease are more likely to have low bone density than other similar women.

Osteoporosis is more common in Caucasian whites. The reason is unknown.

Over supplementation of  Thyroid hormone can increase low bone density. A blood test will determine proper dosages.

Nutrition and Supplements

More than 2  cups of caffeinated drinks daily increases calcium loss from the kidney. Oxalate, a substance found in tea, binds calcium in the intestine, reducing its absorption; these promote osteoporosis by increased calcium loss from the body.

Essential vitamins and minerals are found naturally in a variety of fresh produce, which is always a good choice in a daily diet; while adding supplements to any diet assures necessary intake. "DIET FOR LIFE"

Enough Calcium in the diet is a must for all age groups, especially in children and older adults. Dietary consumption of enough low fat dairy products,  and/or vitamin supplements is essential. The dosage of supplements do vary with each patient and age group and should be discussed with a nutritionist and/or a physician. Some people choose to avoid dairy products, and should take enough of the required supplements to avoid bone deterioration.

Calcium Citrate is an effective choice from other types on the market for a Calcium supplement. Those with osteoporosis are usually recommended a dose of about 1200 mg daily, but it should be discussed with their physician.

Vitamin D is especially important to maintain healthy bone structure and as in Calcium, it is never too early or too late to assure the proper amount needed with a supplement which on average is 250 IU-500 IU, daily, again depending on one's age and condition.

Magnesium supplements help the body to absorb the Calcium and should be added daily in the same manner.

One should always discuss prevention procedures, supplements and dosages with one's personal physician, according to one's age, susceptibility, and present condition of health.
