"Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu
Scriptures have long taught that caring about animals
is a sign of spiritual maturity and responsibility." - Reverend John Millspaugh
Sept. 2, 2006 - Reverend John Millspaugh is the minister at "Tapestry", a Unitarian Universalist congregation in Mission Viejo, California. His views as a guest columnist for the "Orange County Register" on 'Faiths and Kindness to Animals' are interesting and enlightening.
Reverend John Millspaugh:
You won't often hear a Unitarian Universalist quote the pope, but I have to confess, I was impressed by Pope John Paul II's view on animals. In 2002 he called them "humanity's companions in Creation."
We cannot just do whatever we want with them. Industrial use of creatures, ...degrading of living creatures ..contradicts the relationship of mutuality that comes across in the Bible.
Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu Scriptures have long taught that caring about animals is a sign of spiritual maturity and responsibility.
These teachings aren't new, but religious people are paying them new attention. Why? Because of scientist's recent discoveries that animals' lives are more complex than we might have imagined.
Chimpanzees have learned American sign language and have gone on to teach it to their offspring. Prairie dogs use more than 100 nouns and adjectives to describe predators.
Parrots and pigeons have been shown to understand abstract concepts.
As Universalist minister Clarence Russell Skinner put it: "...When it comes to animals our current comprehension is... a milestone on the long arduous journey to the truth."
"Conviction led Unitarian minister Harry Bergh to found the "American Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals" in 1866." - Reverend John Millspaugh
For similar reasons Henry David Thoreau advocated vegetarianism in "Walden", writing: "Humanity can and does live, in great measure, by preying on other animals; but this is a miserable way, as anyone who will go to snaring rabbits, or slaughtering lambs, may learn... "
"It's part of the destiny of the human race, in its gradual improvement, to leave off eating animals." - Henry David Thoreau
Darwin, Skinner, Bergh and Thoreau inspire me not only in the answers they found, but also to their refusal to turn away from difficult questions.
That's the best way I know to take one more step toward the truth.
And in a country that processes nine billion animals in its factory farms and slaughterhouses each year, one more step forward could do a world of good!
